That's the default for the dropdown menu, so you might not have to click it, but make sure it's there. When you go to save it, are you using File menu > Save As? Also, in some cases (which I can't explain why) it's important to not only type ".svg" (without quotation marks) after your file name, but sometimes you have to be sure to choose Inkscape SVG (*.svg) from the dropdown menu. So instead of drawing1.svg, it would say drawing1.file? I always like to be really clear about things.
